Canon reveals pancake prime lens for EOS M system

Canon has announced just two new lenses to go with its newly released CSC, the 22mm is a prime lens with an f/2.0 maximum aperture.

The EOS M is smaller than the average SLR because there's no mirror to reflect light into an optical viewfinder. This allows for lenses to be mounted closer to the sensor, making Canon's existing EF and EF-S lenses not compatible.

Consequently, the camera has a new mount, called the EF-M.

On the face of it the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM pancake lens wouldn't seem to be the choice of the novice market that the Canon M is aimed at.

However, it has to be said that this lens looks very nice on the camera. It suits the compact form of the EOS M extremely well.

Street photography

A fixed focal length optic with an effective focal length of 35mm and a wider than average maximum aperture is likely to hold appeal for enthusiast photographers, especially those who enjoy street photography.

Fortunately the Canon M affords the same level of control over exposure as an SLR like the Canon 650D and there are plenty of advanced features.

Canon is staying tight lipped about the future of the EOS M and the EF-M lens range. Canon UK's David Parry says he has not been informed about any lenses being in development.

Perhaps the company is going to bide it's time and see how the two optics sell before committing to producing any others.

In the meantime, there is the Mount Adapter EF-EOS M that allows Canon EF and EF-S lenses to be mounted on the Canon M.

Like the 18-55mm kit lens, the 22mm uses STM autofocusing. Although slower than ultrasonic motor focusing, it is smoother and quieter and has been particularly designed with video recording in mind.

The Canon EF-M 22mm f/2 price is not yet known, but it is expected to be available from September.
