Today in San Francisco Microsoft debuted Windows Phone 8, highlighting five handsets from Nokia, HTC and Samsung.

Boasting a new core OS that's shared with Windows 8, there are now more than 120,000 apps available for Windows Phone.

Additionally, Windows Phone is now available in 50 languages with apps available in 191 countries.

Live tiles have always been one of Windows Phone 8's more popular features. And today, Microsoft introduced us to Live Apps that can integrate into the wallet and other apps. What's more, the lock screen is now powered by Live Apps.

Microsoft upping their App game

One downside to Windows Phone has been the dearth of apps when compared to iOS and Android.

Microsoft went far to highlight many of the partnerships that they believe will enhance the user experience.

In fact, Microsoft announced a partnership with Facebook. One benefit to this partnership: Users can now make their lock screen update with Facebook photos.

Additionally, there's a new version of Twitter built for Windows Phone 8, as well as a new version of Skype for Windows Phone 8.

Skype for Windows Phone 8 uses a new architecture to make the calling experience significantly better. To be more specific, Skype for Windows Phone 8 is also always on and it does this without running its code in the background and saving your battery life.

For music lovers Microsoft announced that Pandora will be coming to Windows Phone 8 in 2013, and it features a year of free music with no ads.

For those afraid of going over their data limits Microsoft announced a new feature called Data Sense, which lets users surf the web more and use less data. Data Sense does this by compressing web data and actively finding WiFI hotspots.

U.S. residents will see the phone on Verizon Wireless, which will also support Data Sense. And Microsoft claims that users will get 45 percent more web browsing on the same data plan.
