Samsung's first Windows Phone 8 to have WVGA screen?

With Windows Phone 8 launching later this year, the big question remains what new devices will support Microsoft's updated OS.

Details on what appears to be Samsung's first Windows Phone 8 attempt surfaced today, thanks to an XML file recovered from the company's servers. The tip off for the new OS is that

The file documents phone model SGH-i687, which is listed to run Internet Explorer 10 as its web browser. Since the mobile browser is set to launch with Windows Phone 8, it acts as a helpful tip off that we're looking at a device for Microsoft's new OS.

Few actual specs are listed in the XML file, though one nugget we can glean is the screen, which features an 800x480 resolution WVGA display.

Revision, not a revolution

The lack of a 720p capable display means that the SGH-i687 is likely to become a budget handset rather than a media powerhouse.

The screen resolution matches up with Samsung's Focus 2 budget Windows Phone 7.5 device. Conveniently, the Focus 2's model number is SGH-i667.

The new phone appears to be a Windows Phone 8 compatible version of the Focus 2, though whether it will retain that name remains to be seen.

If a Windows Phone 8 Focus 2 reboot is on the table, we're likely to see a lot more of that happening in the first run of devices on Microsoft's new OS. With existing devices locked out of the update, revisions to existing devices is a relatively easy way to support Windows Phone 8 right when it launches.
