RIM gives more detail on BB10 delay

RIM CEO Thorsten Heins has lifted the lid on the reasons behind the BB10 delay and promised big things to come.

Speaking at RIM's AGM, the CEO reiterated the new platform's launch date, and apologetically outlined the reasons behind the move:

"We expect a successful launch of BB10 in the first calendar quarter 2013 â€" this is our number one priority.

"The timelines has shifted to [this date] and is related to the large volume of software code to work through over last few months.

"This is taking more time than anticipated. To be clear, the change in timeline is not related to architecture, but the integration challenge of bringing all this code our diligent R&D teams have created and get it ready for use globally."

Next year is better

Heins even claimed the Q1 2013 BB10 release date was preferable, as many networks will be deploying 4G networks around that time. He also promised the quality will be as high as possible:

"We are working relentlessly to ensure the quality and reliability of this platform. We will not deliver anything less than an outstanding user experience, which I expect the platform to have.

"There will be no compromise on this issue."

Obviously Heins was bullish over RIM's future, but this decision means next year is make or break for the BlackBerry-maker â€" if BB10 fails, it seems there will be very little the brand can do to recover.
