Brook Macdonald wins first DH World Cup in Val d'Isere

New Zealand's Brook Macdonald (MS Mondraker Team) won the first downhill World Cup of his career on Sunday afternoon in Val d'Isere. Macdonald broke the winning streak that Greg Minnaar and Aaron Gwin had shared since the start of the 2011 season.
"I can't even explain in words at the moment how I feel," said Macdonald upon being interviewed just after his victory byRedbull.tv. "I had a solid run with no mistakes. It was just one of those runs. I'm over the moon."
"I struggled all this season and I was at the point where I was hating riding. I changed a few things on my bike, like the suspension set up, and it paid off. This track was hard with the altitude and being 2.5 minutes. You're pushing the whole way and you can't lose time."
"I think I'm going party for a week."
Gee Atherton (GT Racing) finished second, 0.68 seconds after Macdonald while Josh Bryceland (Santa Cruz Syndicate) was third at 0.87 seconds.
The two top favorites were Greg Minnaar (Santa Cruz Syndicate) in fourth and Aaron Gwin (Trek World Racing) in fifth.
Gwin made the podium despite riding with his hand all stitched up after a crash in qualifying. His performance was good enough to enable him to lock up the 2012 World Cup overall win, with one round remaining in Norway in September.
Gwin said, "I had a bonehead moment in qualifying and hurt myself a bit. It was better than I thought it would be. It didn't hurt too much today, but I did have to back it off down toward the bottom. It feels amazing to win the World Cup."
"Everyone is going to win some and lose some. I've lost more races than I've won in my career. I'm stoked to be up here. It's been a good weekend of growth up here."
